Muscles of Joy LP launch

Cry Parrot & Tracer Trails present:

MUSCLES OF JOY LP LAUNCH

Muscles of Joy are one of Glasgow’s best-kept secrets – a multi-instrumental, largely vocal-led all female ensemble. Evoking the similar liberal femininity found in bands such as The Slits, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Kleenex/Liliput and The Raincoats, the band’s musical aesthetic is loose, abstract and emotively driven.

Their debut LP is a glorious collection of accidental pop, freak-folk, post-punk and avante garde songs, each with their own magical identity. Released on Dep from Monorail’s label Watts of Goodwill (also home to Gummy Stumps) – this is a very special release, and one we can’t wait for you all to hear.

Support for the show comes from Glasgow-based grunge outfit PALMS and a dj set from Jamie Grier – who produced the Muscles of Joy album.

Scottish music has surely never been more diverse, curious, and fun than it is right now! To celebrate all that’s exciting and ambitious in Scotland’s underground music scene, non-profit independent promoters Cry Parrot and Tracer Trails are teaming up this September to bring you Music is the Music Language, a two-day festival taking place across three stages in Glasgow multi-arts establishment SWG3.

Both promoters have made their mark through their eclectic remit, providing Glasgow and Edinburgh with a wealth of leftfield and experimental talent, opening up new spaces for live music across both cities. Music is the Music Language will centre on SWG3′s awesome renovated warehouse space, making full use of the venue’s many nooks and crannies, with off-site performances during the day in locations to be revealed much nearer the time.

‘Tokyo’s TENNISCOATS celebrate all that makes song vital in our collective conscious – making music magical with the simplest of means. Matching emotive live performance against delicately psychedelic folk songs, the duo of Saya and Takashi Ueno (assisted by a plethora of floating members/”special friends”) are one of the most compelling units in the Japanese pop underground.

Key catalysts within that scene, Saya and Ueno have performed with Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Cacoy, Puka Puka Brians, Yumbo and others. They’ve also spread their wings more widely collaborating with Lawrence English and the ROOM40 label in Australia and the UK, Tape/Häpna in Sweden, and the OneOne/CanCan hyper-pop juggernaut with Satomi and Greg of Deerhoof. Two Sunsets, their long-awaited record with The Pastels was released via Geographic/Domino in 2009 and followed by a UK tour.’ ~ Cafe Oto

MUSCLES OF JOY are one of Glasgow’s best-kept secrets – an instrument swapping, largely vocal-led all female ensemble. Evoking the similar liberal femininity found in bands such as The Slits, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Kleenex/Liliput and The Raincoats, the band’s musical aesthetic is loose, abstract and emotively driven. Earlier this year we were luckily enough to get a sneak peak of their upcoming mini LP: A glorious collection of accidental pop, freak-folk, post-punk and avante garde songs, each with their own magical identity.

TANGLES: A solo project from Ricky Egan – also a current member of Happy Particles and Neighbourhood Gout. Utilizing guitar, vocals, an old drum machine an arsenal of loop, flange, chorus and reverb pedals, he creates soft, floating, ethereal songs that evoke dreamy nostalgia. Not afraid to note his influences – Robert Fripp, Vangelis and Cocteau Twins being a central few – Tangles feels as much like a trip to the stars as a night in listening to your favourite records.

Vegetarians / Vegans attend Tracer Trails event

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

The Calvin Johnson shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh were sold out and superb! Many thanks to Calvin, MoJ, Joe, Bart, Clarissa.

‎”A fair amount of vegetarians and vegans” were in attendance on Tuesday, it’s true! Not too many and not too few.

Did Calvin find your resonant frequency?

If you took photos of either of the nights, I’d love to see them! Please send them over to tt [at] tracertrails.co.uk.

CALVIN JOHNSON

Based in Olympia, Washington, USA, Calvin’s work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982.

In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic, a recording studio, in which he has documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic Sound System.

The decade of the double zeroes has seen Calvin Johnson set out into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes.

MUSCLES OF JOY

“Muscles of Joy are an all-female group of Glasgow-based artists and musicians, Leigh Ferguson, Victoria Morton, Katy Dove, Ariki Porteous, Jenny O’Boyle, Sophie Macpherson, Anne Marie Copestake and Charlotte Prodger. Formed in early 2008, the group rehearse weekly and their collaborative experiments have developed into a number of songs which explore ideas of improvisation, rhythm, narrative, and the voice. These mesmerizing tracks build on simple, repeating notes, beats and phrases, with the voices of all eight performers employed onstage. A wide variety of acoustic, percussion and electric instruments form part of each track, along with customised instruments of the group’s own making. Off-kilter rhythms and a capella notes are used to create a distinctive DIY sound which traces the history of the female voice in music and art, calling to mind the non-linear narratives of Meredith Monk and the feminist subject matter of the Raincoats. This summer they record their first EP which will be released by Watts of Goodwill at Monorail, Glasgow.”

All right – that’s a great description of what MoJ do and sort of how they sound (cribbed from the programme notes for the Nurse With Wound event at Tramway last month), but what it cannot tell you is how elating it is to watch them fall in and out of line, switching up their instruments and sharing vocal duties like a hivemind. Muscles of Joy are the type of live band who let you see the process behind everything they play – true DIY – and (relatedly) one of the rare groups who make me wish I had a group of my own. So excited for this show.

(i) So psyched that MUSCLES OF JOY have agreed to open up CALVIN JOHNSON‘s Glasgow show on August 3rd. My new favourite band and my old favourite band. I’ve still to confirm venues for that and the Edinburgh show on Aug 4th….. that info should follow in the next week or two.

(ii) Thanks are due to the SCOTTISH ARTS COUNCIL YOUNG SCOT ACTION FUND who have awarded Tracer Trails & The Gentle Invasion (Gentle Trails!) a contribution towards the costs of presenting RETREAT! FESTIVAL 2010. This year our annual celebration of grassroots music-making will be taking place over the weekend of August 21st-22nd, somewhere in the CITY OF LEITH. Lineup t.b.a. very soon!

(iii) If you’re planning to attend the PEKKO KAPPI / ALASDAIR ROBERTS / GARY WEST concert on Wednesday, June 16th, please note that this will be taking place in the ROXY THEATRE rather than the ROXY ROOM. From the main door of Lady Glenorchy’s Church, go up the stairs instead of down the stairs and you’ll have no trouble locating this super-intimate black box theatre where all three will be playing 100% unplugged (Downsize Trails?). Tickets available from WEGOTTICKETS.COM or AVALANCHE RECORDS.
