Jeffrey Lewis (Rough Trade) and Peter Stampfel of Holy Modal Rounders / The Fugs team up for a duo tour, this being the only Scottish date thereon.

Wow! This is going to be a singular event, for sure. NYC anti-folk star Jeffrey Lewis (Rough Trade) is bringing to the UK his collaborative show with 60s psych-folk original Peter Stampfel (of Holy Modal Rounders / The Fugs). Jeffrey and Peter will be trading songs, chatting, playing and singing on each other’s stuff, ably assisted by a vintage Jeff Lewis backing ensemble.

More info?

JEFFREY LEWIS is an American songwriter and comic book artist whose ‘low budget videos’, hand-drawn History of Communism in China, rhyming lecture on The History of Punk on the Lower East Side and dark fantasies about Will Oldham have brought him cult notoriety over the past decade or so, his ultra-sharp lyricising and slacker delivery defining the sound of New York ‘anti-folk’.

Here’s what Jeff has to say about Peter:

PETER STAMPFEL, of the legendary 60s psych-folk band The Holy Modal Rounders, is one of the strangest and most wonderful and colorful characters you are likely to meet. He is who-knows how old now (mid-70s?), and still at least as spry and fiery and inventive and absurdist and captivating as he ever was, if not more! He has never stopped writing and recording awesome songs and giving inspiring performances, and I’ve been lucky to have become an acquaintance of his over the past few years here in NYC (over a mutual love of comic books – he’s an expert!).

Peter is a great writer and performer but he’s also a great historian – his knowledge of folk music is so impressive that he actually wrote the liner notes for the completely essential Smithsonian Folk Anthology box set, as well as the liner notes for the massively popular Karen Dalton CD reissues of a few years back (he was a friend of hers) and other such stuff. The Holy Modal Rounders even famously contributed to the quintessential 60s soundtrack of Easy Rider!

Peter and his band were the subject of the recent awesome feature-length documentary “Bound To Lose” which I highly recommend… Youtube trailer here (Peter’s the one without the beard): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osRM14sBZuY”

Support at this show will come from the magnificent Two Wings: a new project from Hanna Tuulikki (Nalle), Ben Reynolds, and some of their friends.
